Why RESET Counselling
RESET Counselling grew out of my experience working in addiction services and seeing both the value of specialized support and the difficulty people can sometimes face finding counselling that addresses their specific concerns.
Specialized counselling is not always easy to access. People seeking support for gambling, gaming, technology use, and related addiction concerns may have limited options available to them, particularly when they also need services that fit around work, family responsibilities, location, transportation, privacy, or other demands in their lives.
I created RESET to offer another option and to build a practice with greater flexibility around some of these barriers. The goal is to meet clients where they are rather than expecting their circumstances to fit within a particular service structure. That is why counselling is offered virtually across Ontario, with evening and weekend appointments available.
Cost can also be a significant barrier to accessing specialized support. RESET offers limited sliding-scale availability to help make counselling as financially accessible as reasonably possible while maintaining a sustainable professional practice. This provides another way to reduce barriers for people who may otherwise have difficulty accessing counselling.
The name RESET reflects the principles that guide the practice: Reduce Risk, Establish Balance, Support Change, Empower Choice, and Take Control. These principles recognize that meaningful change does not look the same for everyone. Some people may want to make significant changes immediately, while others may begin by understanding their patterns, reducing risk, or taking smaller steps toward greater balance and control.
RESET is ultimately about creating a flexible, practical, and non-judgmental space where people can better understand what is happening, decide what they want to change, and receive specialized support shaped around their circumstances, priorities, and goals.
What You Can Expect
Counselling at RESET is collaborative, practical, and centred on you. You can expect a respectful, non-judgmental space where you can speak openly about what is happening, how it is affecting your life, and what you would like to be different.
You do not need to arrive with everything figured out. Part of the counselling process can be making sense of what has been happening, understanding patterns that may have become difficult to manage, and identifying what matters most to you moving forward.
There is also no predetermined goal you are expected to work toward. For some people, meaningful change may involve stopping a behaviour altogether. For others, it may mean reducing risk, establishing healthier limits, regaining balance and control, or simply beginning to understand their relationship with gambling, gaming, technology use, or other addiction-related concerns. Your goals can also change as counselling progresses.
We will work together to identify practical strategies that fit your circumstances rather than expecting you to fit into a one-size-fits-all approach. Counselling can involve exploring patterns and triggers, strengthening motivation for change, developing ways to manage urges or difficult situations, building healthier routines and boundaries, and addressing the impacts these concerns may be having in other areas of your life.
The process is individualized and moves at a pace that works for you. My role is to bring specialized knowledge, clinical experience, perspective, and practical support to the conversation while respecting that you bring the knowledge of your own life, experiences, priorities, and values.
Ultimately, counselling at RESET is about helping you better understand where you are now, decide where you want to go, and work toward changes that are realistic, meaningful, and sustainable for you.
